Women`s Day message from the Mayor, Cllr TE Maphumulo
8 August 2012
South Africa commemorates Women`s Month in August as a tribute to the thousands of women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women.
This historic march was a turning point in the role of women in the struggle for freedom and society at large. Since that eventful day, women from all walks of life became equal partners in the struggle for a non-racial and non-sexist South Africa.
The theme for this year is "56 years of women united against poverty, inequality and unemployment". This year`s theme focuses on main challenges of South Africa in fighting poverty, inequality and unemployment of which women bear the most brunt. I would like to make a clarion call for all of us women to do more than what we have been doing in order to ensure that the vision of a better life for all becomes a living reality for all women.
As the Mayor of Mkhambathini Local Municipality I would like to wish women all across South Africa a happy Women`s Day.
Wathinta Abafazi Wathinta Imbokodo!
You Strike a Woman, You Strike A Rock!
